چکیده

High resolution computer simulations of two-dimensional convection using the anelastic approximation are presented. These calculations span Rayleigh numbers from 10 10 for Prandtl number equal to unity, with the uid density decreasing by a factor of 12 from the bottom to the top of the convection region. This range covers several decades in the \hard" turbulent regime. While many studies of this sort have been conducted for the Boussinesq approximation (i.e. no density strati cation), these are the rst to use the anelastic approximation with a signi cant density strati cation in this turbulent regime. The convection is dominated by a large scale coherent ow composed of ascending and descending superplumes. We nd a power law exponent of 0.28 for the NusseltRayleigh number scaling and a power law with exponent of 0.50 for the Reynolds-Rayleigh number scaling for the entire parameter space studied. These values are very similar to those determined experimentally and analytically for convection with no density strati cation.

Simulations of two-dimensional turbulent convection in a density-stratified fluid.

Whole-field density measurements by `synthetic schlieren'

This paper outlines novel techniques for producing qualitative visualisations of density ̄uctuations and for obtaining quantitative whole-®eld density measurements in two-dimensional density-strati®ed ̄ows. These techniques, which utilise image processing technology, are much simpler to set up than the classical schlieren and interferometry methods, and provide useful information in situations ...

Numerical Study of turbulent free convection of liquid metal with constant and variable properties in the presence of magnetic field

In this research, turbulent MHD convection of liquid metal with constant and variable properties is investigated numerically. The finite volume method is applied to model the fluid flow and natural convection heat transfer in a square cavity. The fluid flow and heat transfer were simulated and compared for two cases constant and variable properties. It is observed that for the case variable pro...

Natural Convection and Entropy Generation in Γ-Shaped Enclosure Using Lattice Boltzmann Method

This work presents a numerical analysis of entropy generation in Γ-Shaped enclosure that was submitted to the natural convection process using a simple thermal lattice Boltzmann method (TLBM) with the Boussinesq approximation.  A 2D thermal lattice Boltzmann method with 9 velocities, D2Q9, is used to solve the thermal flow problem. The simulations are performed at a constant Prandtl number (Pr ...

Evaluation of two lattice Boltzmann methods for fluid flow simulation in a stirred tank

In the present study, commonly used weakly compressible lattice Boltzmann method and Guo incompressible lattice Boltzmann method have been used to simulate fluid flow in a stirred tank. For this purpose a 3D Parallel code has been developed in the framework of the lattice Boltzmann method. This program has been used for simulation of flow at different geometries such as 2D channel fluid flow an...
